IS AMERICA (STILL) A CHRISTIAN NATION?
Are there Christians still contending for the faith? Yes.
Is America by and large a Christian nation? No, not anymore.
There is no doubt that many people will shout a resounding "Yes" although the evidence proves otherwise. It does not matter that the morals of society have slid off a proverbial cliff and we witness unjust laws and judgments everyday. Hollywood and television have become increasingly violent and wicked. Things that could of never been said or shown years back are now common place. Laws have been passed that uplift the immoral and silence the righteous. We see this in our schools (prayer and paddling taken away), courts (gay marriage upheld), political polices (politicians vote yes to allow gay and transgender men in women restrooms) and constitutional rights (freedom of speech squashed in favor of "political correctness.") Those who have the intestinal fortitude to speak up and stand against these things are saw as ignorant, old fashioned, and prejudiced. The truth is, America has become a gutter of sin and debauchery.
By and large America has chosen to ignore the standards of the Bible and adopt the standards of sin. In fact, the America of today is so twisted that it calls the standards of God evil and the standards of sin rightness. This is nothing new. The prophet Isaiah had this to say about the people of his day.
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! -Isaiah 5:20
God has prophesied it.
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
God has promised to reveal evil and to destroy it.
8And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
Along with every person that loved evil and hated truth, who loved the pleasures of this world and rejected salvation.
10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.11And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Yes, this has all been prophesied. But the question to YOU my friends is who do YOU choose. Who do YOU deem as right, God or man?
A FROG IN A POT
A frog is an amazing animal that has the ability to adapt to its surroundings. When I was in high school biology, my teacher told us about a frog in a pot. He claimed that if you drop it in a pot of hot water it would quickly hop out, but if you use cool water and slowly increase the heat, it will just sit there and boil to death. The slow change in temperature would mask the fact that it's in imminent danger. For years I believed this before I found out that it was just and urban myth. (The frog will never be still long enough for us to find out anyway!)
Whether this is true or false in the case of the frog, it's definitely true in the lives of men. It's easy to imagine the frog sitting there while the fire is slowly increased. I don't know what a frog thinks, but it's hard for me to believe that the change in temperature goes unnoticed. I believe the frog knows that things are changing but doesn't see it as an issue. Little by little the temperature rises and little by little the frog adapts. While the amphibian sits there content and unconcerned, it slowly drifts into a permanent sleep. Sadly, this is the same error repeated by Christians today. This, my friends, is the state of our churches.
As the morals and integrity of the world have slowly melted away, Christians have hardly noticed because we reason that things are just a little bit worse than they were when we were children. As Christians grow less compassionate and more compromising in the ways of God, the heathen have slowly taken over. What once was a Christian nation is now a haven for the profane. As error and false doctrine creep into our pulpits, we sit back content, unconcerned, and unaware that we are dying.
Yes, my friends, the changes are obvious yet ignored. My parents remember a time when it was safe to sleep with the windows open. In fact, when their air conditioning failed, they sometimes did this. Do you want to try that now? I can remember when there was no such thing as security guards at church. Now, if the church is of a certain size, there will more likely than not be someone protecting it. (Unfortunately, it's not unheard of to have theft or vandalism on church grounds). There was a time when children could have sleep overs and be trusted with parents, coaches or teachers. Not in the world we live in today. How many times have we seen our trust violated by someone in a position of authority? Just imagine how different the world was in your grandparents time,.... your great grandparents?
A sniper unknowingly takes a defective weapon on a mission to take down a terrorist. At one hundred yards away the sight is only off by a centimeter. Unfortunately, he can only get within a mile of his target without being detected. As he patiently waits in camouflage, the terrorist finally comes into the open. He steady's his hands, peers through his scope, controls his breathing, and like he has done many times before, pulls the trigger. A plant beside the terrorist explodes as he quickly scurries back inside his bunker. The sniper, who never misses, has missed by nearly a foot.
Error that is miniscule now will grow to be large as time goes on. A little lie here, a little lie there, a little error here, a little error there, a little tolerance here, a little tolerance there; two thousand years later and what have you got? A church that looks nothing like what Jesus intended and Christians that look more like the world than Christ.
America is no longer the Christian nation that our founding fathers intended.
Evidence of these claims?
Nearly 150 years ago, Abraham Lincoln saw that America was blessed even in the midst of civil war. He saw that there was food to eat, a population increase, strength of industry and hope for the end of war. He also saw the nation's need to remember the God who made it all possible. Up until then, each state celebrated Thanksgiving at their own time. On October 20, 1864, Lincoln wrote a proclamation making Thanksgiving day officially the same for everyone. He also changed the idea behind the holiday. He wanted America, a Christian nation, to remember God and be thankful for His blessings. This Christian America, was in truth, the greatest nation on earth.
If someone asks why we celebrate Thanksgiving today, I wonder how many people will remember Columbus and how many people will remember the Lord?
I have copied Lincoln's resolution. Although it is lengthy, it reveals much about how the American leaders once felt about God.
President LINCOLN'S Thanksgiving Proclamation The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful years and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the field of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore. Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union. In testimony wherof I have herunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. [Signed] A. Lincoln |
What are we being taught anyway?
Does the average American today believe that the only reason we are blessed is because of the grace of God? There's no doubt that Lincoln realized that America was blessed by the hand of God. It should also be noted that in addition to this proclamation, Lincoln also instituted a National Day of Fasting and Prayer.
Can you imagine a president today making a proclamation that everyone thank God on a certain day or a proclamation that everyone fast and pray? The reason for this is that we are no longer a Christian nation. Of course there are Christians in this nation, but it has become so diluted with other religions and cults, we must be politically correct to everyone. Even those who claim to be Christian are not necessarily Christian.
Just one flip of the television to so called “Christian” broadcasting will yield a sea of falsehood. Not everything will be bad, in fact, most of what is said will be helpful. It's the one centimeter of error that will cause the message to miss the mark. Doctrine not aimed at Jesus is the same as a faulty gun sight. There is no room for error with the essentials of Christianity!
Okay, try this for a week with several different (Christian) programs, (two a day). Before you listen, pray that God open your understanding and listen closely to what's said.
Pay no attention to how it makes you feel. Pay no attention to how encouraging it may be. Pay no attention to what you want to hear about.
Pay attention to its focus. Is it on your spiritual growth or on your earthly blessings. Is the focus on you helping others, or God helping you. Are they teaching the blessings of giving or focused on the blessings of receiving?
Part of loving someone is telling them the truth. Somewhere down the line, people began to see absolute truth as the enemy. Yes, sometimes the truth is painful and challenging, but it's also what draws us to Christ. Many would rather walk the candy coated highway of destruction than scale the jagged mountain of eternal life. The journey may not be as pleasant but the destination is worth the trip.
Can America be a Theocracy?
The nation of Israel was the only true theocracy. Since a theocracy is a government which derives its power immediately from God, the worship of other “gods” was outlawed. If an Israelite was found in idol worship, they were subject to be stoned.
If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant, 3And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; 4And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and inquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel: 5Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die. Deuteronomy 17:2-5
Since America is the “Great Melting Pot,” who welcomes all races and religions, it could never be a biblical theocracy. Freedom of religion allows Christians to worship God free from the fears and hindrances that plagued the early church. The disadvantage of American religious freedom is that it allows a platform false religion as well as the profane and godless.
In a true theocracy, God is King, the sovereign. After God delivered Israel from Egypt through Moses, He led them through the wilderness and into the land He had promised them. God then established judges who were to lead the people into His will. While Samuel was judge of Israel, the people desired to have a king instead of a judge. Samuel was dismayed by the people's rejection of his authority but after God assured him that it was He that the people were rejecting and not Samuel, God gave them what they wanted. Israel's first king was a tall and handsome man named Saul. In time, Saul failed to do the will of God and was rejected.
Samuel then anointed a boy named David to be king of Israel. It is David's throne that God has promised to establish forever.
He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 2 Samuel 7:13
David's throne was the throne of the Lord, and succession to the throne descended in David's line to Zedekiah who entered into a solemn covenant that he would loyally render allegiance to the king of Babylon. When Zedekiah broke his covenant, God told him to take off the crown and that the kingdom would be overturned, “until he come whose right it is; and i will give it him." Ezekiel 21:25-27. In His prophetic announcement, God says “overturn” three times. The kingdom was now subject to Babylon and when Babylon fell, succeeded by Medo-Persia. When Medo-Persia fell, it was succeeded by Greece. When the Greek empire gave way to Rome, it was overturned the third time. And then says the word, "it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and i will give it him."
So then, the kingdom has been overturned three times and is now waiting for the one “whose right it is.” Whose right is it? "thou . . . Shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the son of the highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." Luke 1:31-33.
"Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence." John 18:36
